அப்பொழுது சவுல்: யோனத்தானே, நீ சாகத்தான்வேண்டும்; இல்லாவிட்டால் தேவன் எனக்கு அதற்குச் சரியாகவும் அதற்கு அதிகமாகவும் செய்யக்கடவர் என்றான்.

இப்பொழுது ராஜாவாகிய என்னுடைய ஆண்டவன் தம்முடைய அடியானுடைய வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்பாராக; கர்த்தர் உம்மை எனக்கு விரோதமாக தூண்டிவிட்டது உண்டானால், அதற்கு அவர் காணிக்கையை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வாராக; மனிதர்கள் அதைச் செய்தார்களென்றால், அவர்கள் கர்த்தருக்கு முன்பாகச் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள்; அவர்கள்: நீ போய்; அந்நிய தேவர்களைத் தொழுதுகொள் என்று சொல்லி, அவர்கள் இன்று என்னைக் கர்த்தருடைய சுதந்தரத்தில் சேரமுடியாதபடி துரத்திவிட்டார்களே.

எனது எஜமானனாகிய அரசனே! நான் சொல்வதைக் கவனியும்! என் மீது உமக்கு கோபம் வரும்படி, கர்த்தர் செய்திருந்தால் அதற்கு தகுந்த காணிக்கையை அவர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வாராக, மனிதர்கள் செய்திருந்தால், அதற்கு கர்த்தர் அவர்களுக்குத் தண்டனை அளிக்கட்டும். கர்த்தர் எனக்குக் கொடுத்த நாட்டைவிட்டுப் போகும்படி மனிதர்கள் செய்துவிட்டார்களே. ‘போய் அந்நியரோடு வாழு, அவர்களின் தெய்வங்களுக்கு சேவைசெய்’ என்று மனிதர்கள் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள்.
