1 আমার ভাই ও বোনেরা, তোমাদের মধ্যে বেশী লোকের শিক্ষক হওয়ার জন্য চেষ্টা করার দরকার নেই, কারণ তোমরা জান য়ে আমরা শিক্ষক বলে অন্যদের থেকে আমাদের বিচার কঠোর হবে৷
2 কারণ আমরা সকলেই নানাভাবে অন্যায় করে থাকি৷ যদি কেউ তার কথাবার্তায় অসংযত না হয়, তবে সে একজন খাঁটি লোক, সে সব বিষয়ে নিজের দেহকে সংযত রাখতে পারে৷
3 ঘোড়াদের বশে রাখার জন্য, আমরা তাদের মুখে বলগা দিই এবং তার ফলে তাদের সমস্ত দেহকে আমরা আমাদের পছন্দমত য়ে কোনও দিকে পরিচালিত করতে পারি৷
4 আবার জাহাজের কথা ভাব, তারা কত প্রকাণ্ড, প্রচণ্ড বাতাসের মধ্যে দিয়ে চলে, অথচ ছোট্ট একটা হালের সাহায্যে নাবিক সেটাকে য়েদিকে ইচ্ছা সেদিকে নিয়ে যায়৷
5 তেমনি জিভও দেহের একটা ছোট অঙ্গ, তবু তা বড় বড় কথা বলে৷দেখ আগুনের একটা ছোট ফুলকি কেমন করে এক বিরাট বনকে পুড়িয়ে ছারখার করে দেয়৷
6 জিভও তেমনি আগুনের ফুলকির মতো৷ আমাদের দেহের অঙ্গগুলির মধ্যে জিভ হল অধর্মের এক জগত, কারণ জিভ থেকেই নানা মন্দ আমাদের সমস্ত দেহে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে৷ নরকের আগুনে জিভ জ্বলে উঠে গোটা জীবনকে প্রভাবিত করে৷
7 মানুষ সব রকমের পশু-পাখী, সরীসৃপ ও সমুদ্রের প্রাণীকে দমন করে রাখতে পারে আর তাদের বশে রাখতে পারে;
8 কিন্তু কোন মানুষ জিভকে বশে রাখতে পারে না, এই জিভ সব সময়ই অস্থির, মন্দ ও মারাত্মক বিষে ভরা৷
9 এই জিভ দিয়েই আমরা কখনও আমাদের প্রভু ও পিতার প্রশংসা করি, আবার কখনও বা ঈশ্বরের সাদৃশ্যে সৃষ্ট মানুষকে অভিশাপ দিই৷
10 একই মুখ থেকে প্রশংসা ও অভিশাপ নির্গত হয়৷ ভাই ও বোনেরা, এমন হওযা উচিত নয়৷
11 একই উত্স থেকে কি কখনও মিষ্টি ও তেতো দুরকম জল নিঃসৃত হয়?
12 আমার ভাই ও বোনেরা, দ্রাক্ষা লতায় কি ডুমুর ফল ধরে? তেমনি নোনা জলের উত্স থেকে কি মিষ্টি জল পাওয়া যায়?
13 তোমাদের মধ্যে জ্ঞানী ও বুদ্ধিমান কে? সে সত্ জীবনযাপন করে ও নম্রতার সাথে ভাল কাজ করে গর্বহীনভাবে তার বিজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করুক৷
14 তোমাদের মনে যদি তিক্ততা, ঈর্ষা ও স্বার্থপরতা থাকে তাহলে তোমাদের জ্ঞানের বড়াই করো না; করলে তোমাদের গর্ব হবে আর এক মিথ্যা, যা সত্যকে ঢেকে রাখে৷
15 এই ধরণের ‘জ্ঞান’ যা ঈশ্বর থেকে লাভ হয় না তা পার্থিব, আত্মিক নয়, তা দিয়াবলের কাছ থেকে আসে৷
16 য়েখানে ঈর্ষা ও স্বার্থপরতা রয়েছে সেখানেই বিশৃঙ্খলা ও সব রকমের নোংরামি থাকে৷
17 কিন্তু য়ে জ্ঞান ঈশ্বর থেকে আসে তা প্রথমতঃ শুচিশুদ্ধ পরে শান্তিপ্রিয়, সুবিবেচক, বাধ্যতা, দয়া ও সত্ কাজে পূর্ণ, পক্ষপাত শূন্য ও আন্তরিক৷
18 যাঁরা শান্তির জন্য শান্তির পথে কাজ করে চলে, তারা উত্তম জিনিস লাভ করে যা যথার্থ জীবনযাপনের মধ্য দিয়ে আসে৷
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

1 ਇਹ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਅਲਕੋਸ਼ੀ ਨਹੂਮ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਨੀਨਵਾਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਲਈ ਸ਼ੋਕਮਈ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ।

2 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦਾ ਨੀਨਵਾਹ ਤੇ ਕਰੋਧ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਈਰਖਾਲੂ ਅਤੇ ਬਦਲਾਖੋਰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੰਡ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਬੜਾ ਕਰੋਧਵਾਨ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਰੋਧਵਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
3 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਧੀਰਜਵਾਨ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੋਖੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਬੁਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਣ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਵਿਖਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਹਨੇਰੀ ਝੱਖੜ ਤੇ ਵਾਵਰੋਲੇ ਲਿਆਵੇਗਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਧੂੜ ਤੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ’ਚ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਝਿੜਕ ਕੇ ਆਖੇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨੀਰ ਸੁੱਕ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਕਾਅ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਬਾਸ਼ਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਰੱਖੇਜ਼ ਧਰਤੀਆਂ ਸੁੱਕ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਲਬਾਨੋਨ ਦੇ ਫ਼ੁੱਲ ਮੁਰਝਾਅ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
5 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਵੇਗਾ ਪਹਾੜ ਡਰ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਬਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਟਿੱਲੇ ਪਿੰਘਰ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਆਵੇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਭੈਅ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਬੇਗੀ। ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਅ ਭੈਭੀਤ ਹੋਣਗੇ।
The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
6 ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਂਕਰੋਧ ਅੱਗੇ ਠਹਿਰ ਨਾ ਸੱਕੇਗਾ। ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸਦਾ ਅੱਗ ਵਾਂਗ ਭਭਕਦਾ ਕਰੋਧ ਸਹਾਰ ਨਾ ਪਾਵੇਗਾ। ਚੱਟਾਨਾਂ ਫ਼ਟ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਵੇਗਾ।
Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
7 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ। ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ’ਚ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਉਸਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
8 ਪਰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੜੋਂ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੜ੍ਹ ਵਾਂਗ ਵਹਾਅ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਨੇਰੇ ’ਚ ਧੱਕ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
9 ਤੁਸੀਂ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਫ਼ ਵਿਉਂਤਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ? ਉਹ ਸਤਿਆਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਦੂਸਰੀ ਵਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਵੇਗੀ।
What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
10 ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੋਂਗੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁੱਕੇ ਝਾੜ ਭੱਠੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਭਸਮ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.
11 ਅੱਸ਼ੂਰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਮਨੱਖ ਆਇਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਮਤੇ ਪਕਾਏ, ਅਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the Lord, a wicked counseller.
12 ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖੀਆਂ: “ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅੱਸ਼ੂਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਪੂਰੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਵੱਡੀ ਫ਼ੌਜ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਮੇਰੇ ਲੋਕੋ, ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ।
Thus saith the Lord; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
13 ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਰ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ। ਅੱਸ਼ੂਰ ਦੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੋਰ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਨਾ ਰਹੋਁਗੇ, ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੋਢਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਭਾਰ ਲਾਹ ਸੁੱਟਾਂਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਂਜੀਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਕੜੀ ਬੈਠੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਭੰਨ ਸੁੱਟਾਂਗਾ।”
For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.
14 ਅੱਸ਼ੂਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ, ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ: “ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉਂ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਕਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੁੱਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਧਾਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੂਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੋੜ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਬਰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤ ਨੇੜੇ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।”
And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.
15 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ, ਵੇਖ! ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਉਪਰੋ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਵਾਹਕ ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਖਦਾ: ਉੱਥੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹੈ। ਯਹੂਦਾਹ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਰਬ ਮਨਾ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਇਕਰਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਪੂਰੇ ਕਰ। ਇਹ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਲੋਕ ਮੁੜ ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਹਮਲਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਨਗੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਬਦ ਲੋਕ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
