રાજા અહાશ્વેરોશ પાટનગર સૂસામાં તેના સિંહાસન પર મહેલમાંથી રાજ્ય કરતો હતો.

ભલે રાજા દરેક પ્રાંતમાં આ કામને માટે લોકોને નીમે. તેઓ જુવાન સૌદર્યવાન કુમારિકાઓને પસંદ કરીને પાટનગર સૂસાના મહેલના જનાનખાનામાં લઇ આવે. જનાનખાના પર નીમેલા રાજાના ખોજા હેગેની સંભાળ નીચે તેઓ રહે. આ કુમારિકાઓને સૌંદર્યના દ્રવ્યો હેગે પુરા પાડશેે.

સંદેશાવાહકોએ આ હુકમનામાની જાહેરાત સૌપ્રથમ સૂસાનાં પાટનગરમાં કરી. પછી સંદેશવાહકો આ આદેશપત્રોને દરેક પ્રાંતમાં આપવા ગયા. સૂસાનું સમગ્ર નગર ભયભીત થઇ ગયું અને મુંઝવણમાં મૂકાઇ ગયું. પણ રાજા અને હામાન દ્રાક્ષારસ માણી રહ્યાં હતાં.

જા, સૂસામાં જેટલા યહૂદીઓ છે તે સર્વને ભેગા કર. અને તમે સર્વ આજે મારે માટે ઉપવાસ કરો, ત્રણ દિવસ સુધી રાત્રે કે દિવસે તમારે કોઇએ ખાવું-પીવું નહિ; હું અને મારી દાસીઓ પણ એ જ રીતે ઉપવાસ કરીશું. જો કે એ પણ નિયમ વિરૂદ્ધ છે તોપણ હું રાજાની હજૂરમાં જઇશ; જો મારો નાશ થાય, તો ભલે થાય.
Esther 9:12
તેણે રાણી એસ્તેરને જણાવ્યું, “પાટનગર સૂસામાં યહૂદીઓએ પાંચસો માણસો અને હામાનના દશ પુત્રોને મારી નાખ્યા છે, તો પછી તેમણે રાજ્યના બીજા પ્રાંતોમાં તું મારા દ્વારા શું કરાવા માંગે છે! જે માગે તે આપુ, તારે બીજું શું જોઇએ છે? માંગ અને તે મંજૂર થશે.”
