હું યરૂશાલેમને સંપૂર્ણ તારાજ કરી નાખીશ. ત્યાંથી પસાર થનાર દરેક જોશે કે મેં તેને કેટલું ભારે નુકશાન પહોંચાડ્યું છે! અને તે આ જોઇને આશ્ચર્ય પામશે, કે મે તેનો કેવો નાશ કર્યો.

તો મેં તમને જે ભૂમિ આપી છે તેમાંથી તમને ઉખેડી નાખીશ અને મને અર્પણ કરેલા આ મંદિરનો હું ત્યાગ કરીશ અને આ જગ્યામાં કાંઇક ખરાબ બન્યું હતું તેના માટે આ મંદિરને હું પ્રસિદ્ધ કરીશ.

સમૃદ્ધ ગણાતું અને સુરક્ષિત નગર પોતાના માટે ગર્વથી કહેતું હતું, “મારા જેવું મહાનગર બીજું એક પણ નથી.” હવે તે નગરની સામે જુઓ, તે કેવું વેરાન થઇ ગયું છે! વળી તે પશુઓના રહેવાનું સ્થાન થઇ ગયું છે! તેની પાસે થઇને જનાર દરેક માણસ મશ્કરી કરશે, અને પોતાની મુઠ્ઠી હલાવશે.

યહોવા પૂછે છે, “આ બધા માટે મારે તેમને શું સજા ન કરવી? આવી પ્રજા પર શું મારો આત્મા વૈર નહિ લે?”
