ಆದರೆ ದಾವೀದನು ಚಿಕ್ಕವನಾ ಗಿದ್ದನು. ಹಿರಿಯರಾದ ಆ ಮೂವರು ಸೌಲನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರು.

ಸಮುವೇಲನು--ನಿನಗಿರುವ ಮಕ್ಕ ಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಮಂದಿಯೋ? ಎಂದು ಇಷಯನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಅದಕ್ಕವನು--ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಚಿಕ್ಕವ ನೊಬ್ಬನು ಉಳಿದಿದ್ದಾನೆ; ಇಗೋ, ಅವನು ಕುರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಯುತ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದಾನೆ ಅಂದನು. ಆಗ ಸಮುವೇಲನು ಇಷಯನಿಗೆ--ಅವನನ್ನು ಕರೆಯ ಕಳುಹಿಸು; ಯಾಕಂದರೆ ಅವನು ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬರುವವರೆಗೆ ನಾವು ಕೂತುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದು ಅಂದನು.

ಕರ್ತನು ಆಕೆಗೆ--ನಿನ್ನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಜನಾಂಗಗಳು ಇವೆ. ನಿನ್ನ ಗರ್ಭದೊಳಗಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಎರಡು ತರವಾದ ಜನಗಳು ಬೇರೆಬೇರೆಯಾಗುವರು. ಒಂದು ತರವಾದ ಜನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಬಲಗೊಳ್ಳು ವದು. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಿರಿಯನು ಕಿರಿಯನನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸುವನು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು.
