രാജാവിന്റെ കല്പനയും തീർപ്പും ചെന്ന ഓരോ സംസ്ഥാനത്തും യെഹൂദന്മാരുടെ ഇടയിൽ മഹാദുഃഖവും ഉപവാസവും കരച്ചലും വിലാപവും ഉണ്ടായി; പലരും രട്ടുടുത്തു വെണീറ്റിൽ കിടന്നു.

| came, | מַגִּ֔יעַ | maggîaʿ | ma-ɡEE-ah |
| there was great | אֵ֤בֶל | ʾēbel | A-vel |
| mourning | גָּדוֹל֙ | gādôl | ɡa-DOLE |
| among the Jews, | לַיְּהוּדִ֔ים | layyĕhûdîm | la-yeh-hoo-DEEM |
| and fasting, | וְצ֥וֹם | wĕṣôm | veh-TSOME |
| and weeping, | וּבְכִ֖י | ûbĕkî | oo-veh-HEE |
| wailing; and | וּמִסְפֵּ֑ד | ûmispēd | oo-mees-PADE |
| and many | שַׂ֣ק | śaq | sahk |
| lay | וָאֵ֔פֶר | wāʾēper | va-A-fer |
| in sackcloth | יֻצַּ֖ע | yuṣṣaʿ | yoo-TSA |
| and ashes. | לָֽרַבִּֽים׃ | lārabbîm | LA-ra-BEEM |
