ਦਾਊਦ ਯੱਸੀ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਅੱਠਵਾਂ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸੀ। ਤਿੰਨ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਦੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਸਨ।

ਤਦ ਸਮੂਏਲ ਨੇ ਯੱਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ ਇਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸਨ?” ਯੱਸੀ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਨਹੀਂ! ਮੇਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਵਖਤ ਇੱਜੜ ਨੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਚਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।” ਸਮੂਏਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਬੁਲਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਥੇ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆ। ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਵਕਤ ਤੱਕ ਭੋਜਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਕਾਂਗੇ ਜਦ ਤੀਕ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।”

ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੋ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਹਨ। ਦੋ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਾਕਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਣਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਵੱਖ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਤਕੜਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਵੱਡਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਛੋਟੇ ਦੀ ਖਿਦਮਤ ਕਰੇਗਾ।”
