בֶּן old bēn עֶשְׂרִ֨ים twenty ʿeśrîm וְחָמֵ֤שׁ and five ḥāmēš שָׁנָה֙ years šāne מָלַ֣ךְ he began to reign, mālak אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ וְעֶשְׂרִ֣ים twenty ʿeśrîm וָתֵ֙שַׁע֙ and nine tēšaʿ שָׁנָ֔ה years šāne מָלַ֖ךְ and he reigned mālak בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם in Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim וְשֵׁ֣ם name šēm אִמּ֔וֹ And his mother's ʾēm יְהֽוֹעַדָּ֖ן Jehoaddan yĕhôʿaddîn מִירֽוּשָׁלָֽיִם׃ of Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ And he did ʿāśâ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר right yāšār בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ רַ֕ק but raq לֹ֖א not lōʾ בְּלֵבָ֥ב heart. lēbāb שָׁלֵֽם׃ with a perfect šālēm

וַיְהִ֕י Now it came to pass, hāyâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר when ʾăšer חָֽזְקָ֥ה was established ḥāzaq הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה the kingdom mamlākâ עָלָ֑יו to ʿal וַֽיַּהֲרֹג֙ him, that he slew hārag אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֔יו his servants ʿebed הַמַּכִּ֖ים that had killed nākâ אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ the king melek אָבִֽיו׃ his father. ʾāb

וְאֶת ʾēt בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם their children, bēn לֹ֣א not lōʾ הֵמִ֑ית But he slew mût כִּ֣י but kî כַכָּת֣וּב as written kātab בַּתּוֹרָ֡ה in the law tôrâ בְּסֵ֣פֶר in the book sēper מֹשֶׁה֩ of Moses, mōše אֲשֶׁר where ʾăšer צִוָּ֨ה commanded, ṣāwâ יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹ֗ר saying, ʾāmar לֹֽא shall not lōʾ יָמ֨וּתוּ die mût אָב֤וֹת The fathers ʾāb עַל for ʿal בָּנִים֙ the children, bēn וּבָנִים֙ shall the children bēn לֹֽא neither lōʾ יָמ֣וּתוּ die mût עַל for ʿal אָב֔וֹת the fathers, ʾāb כִּ֛י but kî אִ֥ישׁ every man ʾîš בְּחֶטְא֖וֹ for his own sin. ḥēṭĕʾ יָמֽוּתוּ׃ shall die mût

וַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץ gathered together, qābaṣ אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ Moreover Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ אֶת ʾēt יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah yĕhûdâ וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֣ם and made ʿāmad לְבֵית according to the houses bayit אָב֗וֹת of fathers, ʾāb לְשָׂרֵ֤י them captains śar הָֽאֲלָפִים֙ over thousands, ʾelep וּלְשָׂרֵ֣י and captains śar הַמֵּא֔וֹת over hundreds, mēʾâ לְכָל throughout all kōl יְהוּדָ֖ה Judah yĕhûdâ וּבִנְיָמִ֑ן and Benjamin: binyāmîn וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֗ם and he numbered pāqad לְמִבֶּ֨ן old bēn עֶשְׂרִ֤ים them from twenty ʿeśrîm שָׁנָה֙ years šāne וָמַ֔עְלָה and above, maʿal וַיִּמְצָאֵ֗ם and found māṣāʾ שְׁלֹשׁ them three šālôš מֵא֨וֹת hundred mēʾâ אֶ֤לֶף thousand ʾelep בָּחוּר֙ choice bāḥar יוֹצֵ֣א to go forth yāṣāʾ צָבָ֔א to war, ṣābāʾ אֹחֵ֖ז that could handle ʾāḥaz רֹ֥מַח spear rōmaḥ וְצִנָּֽה׃ and shield. ṣinnâ

וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֣ר He hired śākar מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֗ל out of Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵ֥אָה also an hundred mēʾâ אֶ֛לֶף thousand ʾelep גִּבּ֥וֹר mighty men gibbôr חָ֖יִל of valour ḥayil בְּמֵאָ֥ה for an hundred mēʾâ כִכַּר talents kikkār כָּֽסֶף׃ of silver. kesep

וְאִ֣ישׁ a man ʾîš הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים of God ʾĕlōhîm בָּ֤א But there came bôʾ אֵלָיו֙ to ʾēl לֵאמֹ֔ר him, saying, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֕לֶךְ O king, melek אַל let not ʾal יָב֥וֹא go bôʾ עִמְּךָ֖ with ʿim צְבָ֣א the army ṣābāʾ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּ֣י thee; for kî אֵ֤ין not ʾayin יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ עִם with ʿim יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl כֹּ֖ל all kōl בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ of Ephraim. ʾeprayim

כִּ֚י But kî אִם if ʾim בֹּ֣א wilt go, bôʾ אַתָּ֔ה thou ʾattâ עֲשֵׂ֖ה do ʿāśâ חֲזַ֣ק be strong ḥāzaq לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה for the battle: milḥāmâ יַכְשִֽׁילְךָ֤ shall make thee fall kāšal הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm אוֹיֵ֔ב the enemy: ʾōyēb כִּ֥י for kî יֶשׁ hath yēš כֹּ֛חַ power kōaḥ בֵּֽאלֹהִ֖ים God ʾĕlōhîm לַעְז֥וֹר to help, ʿāzar וּלְהַכְשִֽׁיל׃ and to cast down. kāšal

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ And Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ לְאִ֣ישׁ to the man ʾîš הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God, ʾĕlōhîm וּמַֽה But what mâ לַּעֲשׂוֹת֙ shall we do ʿāśâ לִמְאַ֣ת for the hundred mēʾâ הַכִּכָּ֔ר talents kikkār אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer נָתַ֖תִּי I have given nātan לִגְד֣וּד to the army gĕdûd יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel? yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ answered, ʾāmar אִ֣ישׁ And the man ʾîš הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm יֵ֚שׁ is yēš לַֽיהוָ֔ה The Lord yĕhōwâ לָ֥תֶת able to give nātan לְךָ֖ הַרְבֵּ֥ה thee much more rābâ מִזֶּֽה׃ than this. ze

וַיַּבְדִּילֵ֣ם separated bādal אֲמַצְיָ֗הוּ Then Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ לְהַגְּדוּד֙ them, the army gĕdûd אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בָּ֤א was come bôʾ אֵלָיו֙ to ʾēl מֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִם him out of Ephraim, ʾeprayim לָלֶ֖כֶת to go yālak לִמְקוֹמָ֑ם home māqôm וַיִּ֨חַר kindled ḥārâ אַפָּ֤ם again: wherefore their anger ʾap מְאֹד֙ was greatly mĕʾōd בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה against Judah, yĕhûdâ וַיָּשׁ֥וּבוּ and they returned šûb לִמְקוֹמָ֖ם home māqôm בָּֽחֳרִי in great ḥŏrî אָֽף׃ anger. ʾap

וַֽאֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ And Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ הִתְחַזַּ֔ק strengthened himself, ḥāzaq וַיִּנְהַג֙ and led forth nāhag אֶת ʾēt עַמּ֔וֹ his people, ʿam וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ and went hālak גֵּ֣יא to the valley gayʾ הַמֶּ֑לַח of salt, melaḥ וַיַּ֥ךְ and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn שֵׂעִ֖יר of Seir śēʿîr עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת ten ʿeśer אֲלָפִֽים׃ thousand. ʾelep

וַֽעֲשֶׂ֨רֶת And ten ʿeśer אֲלָפִ֜ים thousand ʾelep חַיִּ֗ים alive ḥay שָׁבוּ֙ carry away captive, šābâ בְּנֵ֣י did the children bēn יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah yĕhûdâ וַיְבִיא֖וּם and brought bôʾ לְרֹ֣אשׁ them unto the top rōš הַסָּ֑לַע of the rock, selaʿ וַיַּשְׁלִיכ֛וּם and cast them down šālak מֵֽרֹאשׁ from the top rōš הַסֶּ֖לַע of the rock, selaʿ וְכֻלָּ֥ם that they all kōl נִבְקָֽעוּ׃ were broken in pieces. bāqaʿ

וּבְנֵ֣י But the soldiers bēn הַגְּד֗וּד of the army gĕdûd אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer הֵשִׁ֤יב sent back, šûb אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מִלֶּ֤כֶת that they should not go yālak עִמּוֹ֙ with ʿim לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה him to battle, milḥāmâ וַֽיִּפְשְׁטוּ֙ fell upon pāšaṭ בְּעָרֵ֣י the cities ʿîr יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ מִשֹּֽׁמְר֖וֹן from Samaria šōmĕrôn וְעַד even unto ʿad בֵּ֣ית חוֹר֑וֹן Beth-horon, bêt ḥôrôn וַיַּכּ֤וּ and smote nākâ מֵהֶם֙ hēm שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת three šālôš אֲלָפִ֔ים thousand ʾelep וַיָּבֹ֖זּוּ of them, and took bāzaz בִּזָּ֥ה spoil. bizzâ רַבָּֽה׃ much rab

וַיְהִ֗י Now it came to pass, hāyâ אַֽחֲרֵ֨י after that ʾaḥar ב֤וֹא was come bôʾ אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֵֽהַכּ֣וֹת from the slaughter nākâ אֶת ʾēt אֲדוֹמִ֔ים of the Edomites, ʾĕdōmî וַיָּבֵ֗א that he brought bôʾ אֶת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵי֙ the gods ʾĕlōhîm בְּנֵ֣י of the children bēn שֵׂעִ֔יר of Seir, śēʿîr וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֥ם and set them up ʿāmad ל֖וֹ לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים his gods, ʾĕlōhîm וְלִפְנֵיהֶ֥ם before pānîm יִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה and bowed down himself šāḥâ וְלָהֶ֥ם יְקַטֵּֽר׃ them, and burned incense unto them. qāṭar

וַיִּֽחַר was kindled ḥārâ אַ֥ף Wherefore the anger ʾap יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ בַּֽאֲמַצְיָ֑הוּ against Amaziah, ʾămaṣyâ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח and he sent šālaḥ אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl נָבִ֔יא him a prophet, nābîʾ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר which said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ לָ֤מָּה unto him, Why mâ דָרַ֙שְׁתָּ֙ hast thou sought after dāraš אֶת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵ֣י the gods ʾĕlōhîm הָעָ֔ם of the people, ʿam אֲשֶׁ֛ר which ʾăšer לֹֽא could not lōʾ הִצִּ֥ילוּ deliver nāṣal אֶת ʾēt עַמָּ֖ם their own people ʿam מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃ out of thine hand? yād

וַיְהִ֣י׀ And it came to pass, hāyâ בְּדַבְּר֣וֹ as he talked dābar אֵלָ֗יו with ʾēl וַיֹּ֤אמֶר him, that said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ הַלְיוֹעֵ֤ץ counsel? yāʿaṣ לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ of the king's melek נְתַנּ֔וּךָ unto him, Art thou made nātan חֲדַל forbear; ḥādal לְךָ֖ לָ֣מָּה why mâ יַכּ֑וּךָ shouldest thou be smitten? nākâ וַיֶּחְדַּ֣ל forbare, ḥādal הַנָּבִ֗יא Then the prophet nābîʾ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar יָדַ֗עְתִּי I know yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî יָעַ֤ץ hath determined yāʿaṣ אֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm לְהַשְׁחִיתֶ֔ךָ to destroy šāḥat כִּֽי thee, because kî עָשִׂ֣יתָ thou hast done ʿāśâ זֹּ֔את this, zōt וְלֹ֥א and hast not lōʾ שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ hearkened šāmaʿ לַֽעֲצָתִֽי׃ unto my counsel. ʿēṣâ

וַיִּוָּעַ֗ץ took advice, yāʿaṣ אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ Then Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah yĕhûdâ וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח and sent šālaḥ אֶל to ʾēl יוֹאָ֨שׁ Joash, yôʾoš בֶּן the son bēn יְהֽוֹאָחָ֧ז of Jehoahaz, yĕhôʾāḥāz בֶּן the son bēn יֵה֛וּא of Jehu, yēhûʾ מֶ֥לֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar לְךָ֖ Come, yālak נִתְרָאֶ֥ה let us see one another rāʾâ פָנִֽים׃ in the face. pānîm

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח sent šālaḥ יוֹאָ֣שׁ And Joash yôʾoš מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל to ʾēl אֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָה֮ of Judah, yĕhûdâ לֵאמֹר֒ saying, ʾāmar הַח֜וֹחַ The thistle ḥôaḥ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן in Lebanon lĕbānôn שָׁ֠לַח sent šālaḥ אֶל to ʾēl הָאֶ֜רֶז the cedar ʾerez אֲשֶׁ֤ר that ʾăšer בַּלְּבָנוֹן֙ in Lebanon, lĕbānôn לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar תְּנָֽה Give nātan אֶת ʾēt בִּתְּךָ֥ thy daughter bat לִבְנִ֖י to my son bēn לְאִשָּׁ֑ה to wife: ʾiššâ וַֽתַּעֲבֹ֞ר and there passed by ʿābar חַיַּ֤ת beast ḥay הַשָּׂדֶה֙ a wild śāde אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן in Lebanon, lĕbānôn וַתִּרְמֹ֖ס and trode down rāmas אֶת ʾēt הַחֽוֹחַ׃ the thistle. ḥôaḥ

אָמַ֗רְתָּ Thou sayest, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֤ה Lo, hinnē הִכִּ֙יתָ֙ thou hast smitten nākâ אֶת ʾēt אֱד֔וֹם the Edomites; ʾĕdōm וּנְשָֽׂאֲךָ֥ lifteth thee up nāśāʾ לִבְּךָ֖ and thine heart lēb לְהַכְבִּ֑יד to boast: kābad עַתָּה֙ now ʿattâ שְׁבָ֣ה abide yāšab בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ at home; bayit לָ֤מָּה why mâ תִתְגָּרֶה֙ shouldest thou meddle gārâ בְּרָעָ֔ה to hurt, raʿ וְנָ֣פַלְתָּ֔ that thou shouldest fall, nāpal אַתָּ֖ה thou, ʾattâ וִֽיהוּדָ֥ה and Judah yĕhûdâ עִמָּֽךְ׃ with thee? ʿim

וְלֹֽא would not lōʾ שָׁמַ֣ע hear; šāmaʿ אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ But Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ כִּ֤י for kî מֵהָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ of God, ʾĕlōhîm הִ֔יא it hûʾ לְמַ֖עַן that maʿan תִּתָּ֣ם he might deliver nātan בְּיָ֑ד them into the hand yād כִּ֣י because kî דָֽרְשׁ֔וּ they sought after dāraš אֵ֖ת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵ֥י the gods ʾĕlōhîm אֱדֽוֹם׃ of Edom. ʾĕdōm

וַיַּ֨עַל went up; ʿālâ יוֹאָ֤שׁ So Joash yôʾoš מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיִּתְרָא֣וּ and they saw one another rāʾâ פָנִ֔ים in the face, pānîm ה֖וּא he hûʾ וַֽאֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ and Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֑ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ בְּבֵ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ at Beth-shemesh, bêt šemeš אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer לִֽיהוּדָֽה׃ to Judah. yĕhûdâ

וַיִּנָּ֥גֶף was put to the worse nāgap יְהוּדָ֖ה And Judah yĕhûdâ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ and they fled nûs אִ֥ישׁ every man ʾîš לְאֹֽהָלָֽיו׃ to his tent. ʾōhel

וְאֵת֩ ʾēt אֲמַצְיָ֨הוּ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָ֜ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ בֶּן the son bēn יוֹאָ֣שׁ And Joash yôʾoš בֶּן the son bēn יְהֽוֹאָחָ֗ז of Jehoahaz, yĕhôʾāḥāz תָּפַ֛שׂ took tāpaś יוֹאָ֥שׁ of Joash, yôʾoš מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּבֵ֣ית שָׁ֑מֶשׁ at Beth-shemesh, bêt šemeš וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ and brought bôʾ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם him to Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim וַיִּפְרֹ֞ץ and brake down pāraṣ בְּחוֹמַ֣ת the wall ḥômâ יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֗ם of Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim מִשַּׁ֤עַר from the gate šaʿar אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ of Ephraim ʾeprayim עַד to ʿad שַׁ֣עַר gate, šaʿar הַפּוֹנֶ֔ה the corner pānâ אַרְבַּ֥ע four ʾarbaʿ מֵא֖וֹת hundred mēʾâ אַמָּֽה׃ cubits. ʾammâ

וְכָֽל And all kōl הַזָּהָ֣ב the gold zāhāb וְהַכֶּ֡סֶף and the silver, kesep וְאֵ֣ת and ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַ֠כֵּלִים the vessels kĕlî הַנִּמְצְאִ֨ים that were found māṣāʾ בְּבֵית in the house bayit הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים of God ʾĕlōhîm עִם with ʿim עֹבֵ֣ד אֱד֗וֹם Obed-edom, ʿōbēd ʾĕdôm וְאֶת ʾēt אֹצְרוֹת֙ and the treasures ʾôṣār בֵּ֣ית house, bayit הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ of the king's melek וְאֵ֖ת ʾēt בְּנֵ֣י the hostages bēn הַתַּֽעֲרֻב֑וֹת taʿărubâ וַיָּ֖שָׁב also, and returned šûb שֹֽׁמְרֽוֹן׃ to Samaria. šōmĕrôn

וַיְחִ֨י lived ḥāyâ אֲמַצְיָ֤הוּ And Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ בֶן the son bēn יוֹאָשׁ֙ of Joash yôʾoš מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah yĕhûdâ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar מ֔וֹת the death mût יוֹאָ֥שׁ of Joash yôʾoš בֶּן son bēn יְהֽוֹאָחָ֖ז of Jehoahaz yĕhôʾāḥāz מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl חֲמֵ֥שׁ fifteen ḥāmēš עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה ʿāśār שָׁנָֽה׃ years. šāne

וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ Now the rest yeter דִּבְרֵ֣י of the acts dābār אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ of Amaziah, ʾămaṣyâ הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֖ים first riʾšôn וְהָאַֽחֲרוֹנִ֑ים and last, ʾaḥărôn הֲלֹא֙ they not lōʾ הִנָּ֣ם behold, hēn כְּתוּבִ֔ים written kātab עַל in ʿal סֵ֥פֶר the book sēper מַלְכֵי of the kings melek יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah yĕhûdâ וְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ and Israel? yiśrāʾēl

וּמֵעֵ֗ת Now after the time ʿēt אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer סָ֤ר did turn away sûr אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ Amaziah ʾămaṣyâ מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֣י from following ʾaḥar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיִּקְשְׁר֨וּ they made qāšar עָלָ֥יו against ʿal קֶ֛שֶׁר a conspiracy qešer בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם him in Jerusalem; yĕrûšālaim וַיָּ֣נָס and he fled nûs לָכִ֑ישָׁה to Lachish: lākîš וַיִּשְׁלְח֤וּ but they sent šālaḥ אַֽחֲרָיו֙ after ʾaḥar לָכִ֔ישָׁה to Lachish lākîš וַיְמִיתֻ֖הוּ him, and slew mût שָֽׁם׃ him there. šām
