இஸ்ரவேலர் அன்றையதினம் மிகுந்த வருத்தம் அடைந்தார்கள்: நான் என் சத்துருக்கள் கையிலே பழிவாங்க வேண்டும், சாயங்காலமட்டும் பொறுக்காமல் எவன் போஜனம் செய்கிறானோ அவன் சபிக்கப்பட்டவன் என்று சவுல் ஜனங்களுக்கு ஆணையிட்டுச் சொல்லியிருந்தபடியால், ஜனங்களில் ஒருவரும் எவ்வளவேணும் போஜனம்பண்ணாதிருந்தார்கள்.

அன்று சவுல் ஒரு பெரிய தவறு செய்தான். இஸ்ரவேலர் களைப்பாகவும் பசியோடும் இருந்தனர். அவர்களிடம், “மாலைக்கு முன் யாராவது உண்டாலோ, பகைவரை வெல்லுமுன் யாராவது உண்டாலோ தண்டிக்கப்படுவார்கள்!” என்று ஆணையிட்டிருந்தான். எனவே யாரும் அன்று உண்ணாமல் இருந்தனர்.
