אַֽל not thyself ʾal תִּ֭תְהַלֵּל Boast hālal בְּי֣וֹם yôm מָחָ֑ר of to morrow; māḥār כִּ֤י for kî לֹא not lōʾ תֵ֝דַ֗ע thou knowest yādaʿ מַה what mâ יֵּ֥לֶד may bring forth. yālad יֽוֹם׃ a day yôm

יְהַלֶּלְךָ֣ praise hālal זָ֣ר Let another man zûr וְלֹא thee, and not lōʾ פִ֑יךָ thine own mouth; pe נָ֝כְרִ֗י a stranger, nokrî וְאַל and not ʾal שְׂפָתֶֽיךָ׃ thine own lips. śāpâ

כֹּֽבֶד heavy, kōbed אֶ֭בֶן A stone ʾeben וְנֵ֣טֶל weighty; nēṭel הַח֑וֹל and the sand ḥôl וְכַ֥עַס wrath kaʿas אֱ֝וִ֗יל but a fool's ʾĕwîl כָּבֵ֥ד heavier kābēd מִשְּׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ than them both. šĕnayim

אַכְזְרִיּ֣וּת cruel, ʾakzĕriyyût חֵ֭מָה Wrath ḥēmâ וְשֶׁ֣טֶף outrageous; šeṭep אָ֑ף and anger ʾap וּמִ֥י but who mî יַ֝עֲמֹד able to stand ʿāmad לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm קִנְאָֽה׃ envy? qinʾâ

ט֭וֹבָה better ṭôb תּוֹכַ֣חַת rebuke tôkēḥâ מְגֻלָּ֑ה Open gālâ מֵֽאַהֲבָ֥ה love. ʾahăbâ מְסֻתָּֽרֶת׃ than secret sātar

נֶ֭אֱמָנִים Faithful ʾāman פִּצְעֵ֣י the wounds peṣaʿ אוֹהֵ֑ב of a friend; ʾāhab וְ֝נַעְתָּר֗וֹת deceitful. ʿātar נְשִׁיק֥וֹת but the kisses nĕšîqâ שׂוֹנֵֽא׃ of an enemy śānēʾ

נֶ֣פֶשׁ soul nepeš שְׂ֭בֵעָה The full śābēaʿ תָּב֣וּס loatheth bûs נֹ֑פֶת an honeycomb; nōpet וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ soul nepeš רְ֝עֵבָ֗ה but to the hungry rāʿēb כָּל every kōl מַ֥ר bitter thing mar מָתֽוֹק׃ is sweet. mātôq

כְּ֭צִפּוֹר As a bird ṣippôr נוֹדֶ֣דֶת that wandereth nādad מִן from min קִנָּ֑הּ her nest, qēn כֵּֽן so kēn אִ֝֗ישׁ a man ʾîš נוֹדֵ֥ד that wandereth nādad מִמְּקוֹמֽוֹ׃ from his place. māqôm

שֶׁ֣מֶן Ointment šemen וּ֭קְטֹרֶת and perfume qĕṭōret יְשַׂמַּֽח rejoice śāmaḥ לֵ֑ב the heart: lēb וּמֶ֥תֶק so the sweetness meteq רֵ֝עֵ֗הוּ of a man's friend rēaʿ מֵֽעֲצַת counsel. ʿēṣâ נָֽפֶשׁ׃ by hearty nepeš

רֵֽעֲךָ֙ Thine own friend, rēaʿ וְרֵ֪עַה friend, rēaʿ אָבִ֡יךָ and thy father's ʾāb אַֽל not; ʾal תַּעֲזֹ֗ב forsake ʿāzab וּבֵ֥ית house bayit אָחִ֗יךָ into thy brother's ʾāḥ אַל neither ʾal תָּ֭בוֹא go bôʾ בְּי֣וֹם in the day yôm אֵידֶ֑ךָ of thy calamity: ʾêd ט֥וֹב better ṭôb שָׁכֵ֥ן a neighbour šākēn קָ֝ר֗וֹב near qārôb מֵאָ֥ח than a brother ʾāḥ רָחֽוֹק׃ far off. rāḥôq

חֲכַ֣ם be wise, ḥākam בְּ֭נִי My son, bēn וְשַׂמַּ֣ח glad, śāmēaḥ לִבִּ֑י and make my heart lēb וְאָשִׁ֖יבָה that I may answer šûb חֹרְפִ֣י him that reproacheth me. ḥārap דָבָֽר׃ dābār

עָר֤וּם׀ A prudent ʿārûm רָאָ֣ה foreseeth rāʾâ רָעָ֣ה the evil, raʿ נִסְתָּ֑ר hideth himself; sātar פְּ֝תָאיִ֗ם the simple pĕtî עָבְר֥וּ pass on, ʿābar נֶעֱנָֽשׁוּ׃ are punished. ʿānaš

קַח Take lāqaḥ בִּ֭גְדוֹ his garment beged כִּי that kî עָ֣רַב is surety ʿārab זָ֑ר for a stranger, zûr וּבְעַ֖ד of him for bĕʿad נָכְרִיָּ֣ה a strange woman. nokrî חַבְלֵֽהוּ׃ and take a pledge ḥābal

מְבָ֘רֵ֤ךְ He that blesseth bārak רֵעֵ֨הוּ׀ his friend rēaʿ בְּק֣וֹל voice, qôl גָּ֭דוֹל with a loud gādôl בַּבֹּ֣קֶר in the morning, bōqer הַשְׁכֵּ֑ים rising early šākam קְ֝לָלָ֗ה a curse to him. qĕlālâ תֵּחָ֥שֶׁב it shall be counted ḥāšab לֽוֹ׃

דֶּ֣לֶף dropping delep ט֭וֹרֵד A continual ṭārad בְּי֣וֹם day yôm סַגְרִ֑יר in a very rainy sagrîd וְאֵ֥שֶׁת woman ʾiššâ מִ֝דְוָנִ֗ים and a contentious mādôn נִשְׁתָּוָֽה׃ are alike. šāwâ

צֹפְנֶ֥יהָ Whosoever hideth ṣāpan צָֽפַן her hideth ṣāpan ר֑וּחַ the wind, rûaḥ וְשֶׁ֖מֶן and the ointment šemen יְמִינ֣וֹ of his right hand, yāmîn יִקְרָֽא׃ bewrayeth qārāʾ

בַּרְזֶ֣ל Iron barzel בְּבַרְזֶ֣ל iron; barzel יָ֑חַד sharpeneth ḥādad וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ so a man ʾîš יַ֣חַד sharpeneth ḥādad פְּנֵֽי the countenance pānîm רֵעֵֽהוּ׃ of his friend. rēaʿ

נֹצֵ֣ר Whoso keepeth nāṣar תְּ֭אֵנָה the fig tree tĕʾēn יֹאכַ֣ל shall eat ʾākal פִּרְיָ֑הּ the fruit pĕrî וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר thereof: so he that waiteth šāmar אֲדֹנָ֣יו on his master ʾādôn יְכֻבָּֽד׃ shall be honoured. kābad

כַּ֭מַּיִם As in water mayim הַפָּנִ֣ים face pānîm לַפָּנִ֑ים to face, pānîm כֵּ֤ן so kēn לֵֽב the heart lēb הָ֝אָדָ֗ם of man ʾādām לָאָדָֽם׃ to man. ʾādām

שְׁא֣וֹל Hell šĕʾôl וַ֭אֲבַדֹּה and destruction ʾăbaddō לֹ֣א are never lōʾ תִשְׂבַּ֑עְנָה full; śābaʿ וְעֵינֵ֥י so the eyes ʿayin הָ֝אָדָ֗ם of man ʾādām לֹ֣א are never lōʾ תִשְׂבַּֽעְנָה׃ satisfied. śābaʿ

מַצְרֵ֣ף the fining pot miṣrēp לַ֭כֶּסֶף for silver, kesep וְכ֣וּר and the furnace kûr לַזָּהָ֑ב for gold; zāhāb וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ so a man ʾîš לְפִ֣י pe מַהֲלָלֽוֹ׃ to his praise. mahălāl

אִ֥ם Though ʾim תִּכְתּֽוֹשׁ thou shouldest bray kātaš אֶת ʾēt הָאֱוִ֨יל׀ a fool ʾĕwîl בַּ֥מַּכְתֵּ֡שׁ in a mortar maktēš בְּת֣וֹךְ among tāwek הָ֭רִיפוֹת wheat rîpâ בַּֽעֱלִ֑י with a pestle, ʿĕlî לֹא will not lōʾ תָס֥וּר depart sûr מֵ֝עָלָ֗יו from him. ʿal אִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃ his foolishness ʾiwwelet

יָדֹ֣עַ Be thou diligent yādaʿ תֵּ֭דַע to know yādaʿ פְּנֵ֣י the state pānîm צֹאנֶ֑ךָ of thy flocks, ṣōn שִׁ֥ית look šît לִ֝בְּךָ֗ well lēb לַעֲדָרִֽים׃ to thy herds. ʿēder

כִּ֤י For kî לֹ֣א not lōʾ לְעוֹלָ֣ם for ever: ʿôlām חֹ֑סֶן riches ḥōsen וְאִם and doth ʾim נֵ֝֗זֶר the crown nezer לְד֣וֹר to every dôr דֽוֹר׃ generation? dôr

גָּלָ֣ה appeareth, gālâ חָ֭צִיר The hay ḥāṣîr וְנִרְאָה sheweth itself, rāʾâ דֶ֑שֶׁא and the tender grass dešeʾ וְ֝נֶאֶסְפ֗וּ are gathered. ʾāsap עִשְּׂב֥וֹת and herbs ʿeśeb הָרִֽים׃ of the mountains har

כְּבָשִׂ֥ים The lambs kebeś לִלְבוּשֶׁ֑ךָ for thy clothing, lĕbûš וּמְחִ֥יר the price mĕḥîr שָׂ֝דֶ֗ה of the field. śāde עַתּוּדִֽים׃ and the goats ʿattûd

וְדֵ֤י׀ enough day חֲלֵ֬ב milk ḥālāb עִזִּ֗ים And goats' ʿēz לְֽ֭לַחְמְךָ for thy food, leḥem לְלֶ֣חֶם for the food leḥem בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ of thy household, bayit וְ֝חַיִּ֗ים and the maintenance ḥay לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ for thy maidens. naʿărâ
