சத்தியமானதை நான் பேசுகிறேன்; நான் மேன்மைபாராட்ட மனதாயிருந்தாலும், நான் புத்தியீனனல்ல, ஆனாலும் ஒருவனும் என்னிடத்தில் காண்கிறதற்கும், என்னாலே கேட்கிறதற்கும் மேலாக என்னை எண்ணாதபடிக்கு அப்படிச் செய்யாதிருப்பேன்.

சத்தியமானதை நான் பேசுகிறேன்; நான் மேன்மைபாராட்ட விரும்பினாலும், நான் புத்தியீனன் இல்லை, ஆனாலும் ஒருவனும் என்னிடம் பார்த்ததற்கும், கேட்டதற்கும் மேலாக என்னை நினைக்காமலிருக்க நான் அப்படிச் செய்யாதிருப்பேன்.

நான் என்னையே பாராட்டிப் பேசிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பினால் நான் முட்டாளாக இருக்கமாட்டேன். ஏனென்றால் நான் உண்மையைச் சொல்லிவிடுவேன். அதோடு நான் சொல்வதையும் செய்வதையும் காணும் மக்கள் என்னைப் பற்றி மிகுதியாக நினைத்துக்கொள்வார்கள். அதனால் என்னைப் பற்றி நானே பெருமை பேசிக்கொள்ளமாட்டேன்.

For if I should desire to glory, I shall not be foolish; for I shall speak the truth: but I forbear, lest any man should account of me above that which he seeth me `to be’, or heareth from me.
