யோவான் கொடுத்த ஸ்நானம் தேவனால் உண்டாயிற்றோ? மனுஷரால் உண்டாயிற்றோ? யாரால் உண்டாயிற்று? என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள்: தேவனால் உண்டாயிற்று என்று சொல்வோமானால், பின்னை ஏன் அவனை விசுவாசிக்கவில்லை என்று நம்மைக் கேட்பார்;

யோவான் கொடுத்த ஞானஸ்நானம் தேவனால் உண்டாயிற்றோ? மனிதர்களால் உண்டாயிற்றோ? யாரால் உண்டானது? என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள்: தேவனால் உண்டாயிற்றென்று சொல்வோமானால், பின்னே ஏன் அவனை விசுவாசிக்கவில்லை என்று நம்மைக் கேட்பார்;

யோவான் மக்களுக்கு கொடுத்த ஞானஸ்நானம் தேவனால் வந்ததா, அல்லது மனிதரால் வந்ததா? சொல்லுங்கள்” என்று மறு மொழி உரைத்தார். தலைமை ஆசாரியர்களும் தலைவர்களும் இயேசுவின் கேள்வியைக் குறித்து விவாதித்தனர். அவர்கள் தங்களுக்குள், “‘யோவானின் ஞானஸ்நானம் தேவனால் ஆனது’ என்று நாம் கூறுவோமானால், இயேசு நம்மைப் பார்த்து, ‘பின் ஏன் நீங்கள் யோவானை நம்பவில்லை?’ என்று கேட்பார்.
