அப்பொழுது கீலேயாத்தின் ஜனங்களும் பிரபுக்களும் ஒருவரையொருவர் நோக்கி: அம்மோன் புத்திரர்மேல் முந்தி யுத்தம்பண்ணப்போகிற மனுஷன் யார்? அவனே கீலேயாத்தின் குடிகளுக்கெல்லாம் தலைவனாயிருப்பான் என்றார்கள்.

அப்பொழுது யெப்தா கீலேயாத்தின் மூப்பரோடே கூடப்போனான்; ஜனங்கள் அவனைத் தங்கள்மேல் தலைவனும் சேனாபதியுமாக வைத்தார்கள். யெப்தா தன் காரியங்களையெல்லாம் மிஸ்பாவிலே கர்த்தருடைய சந்நிதியிலே சொன்னான்.

யோசுவா மரித்தபின் இஸ்ரவேல் புத்திரர் கர்த்தரை நோக்கி: கானானியரை எதிர்த்து யுத்தம்பண்ணும்படி, எங்களில் யார் முதல்முதல் எழுந்து புறப்படவேண்டும் என்று கேட்டார்கள்.
