கீலேயாத்தியனான யெப்தா பலத்த பராக்கிரமசாலியாயிருந்தான்; அவன் பரஸ்திரீயின் குமாரன்; கிலெயாத் அவனைப் பெற்றான்.

பின்பு அவர்கள் ராஜாவிற்கு முன்பாக வந்து, ராஜாவின் உத்திரவைக்குறித்து: எந்த மனிதனாகிலும் முப்பது நாட்கள்வரையில் ராஜாவாகிய உம்மைத்தவிர எந்த தேவனையோ மனிதனையோ நோக்கி எந்தவொரு காரியத்தைக்குறித்து விண்ணப்பம்செய்தால், அவன் சிங்கங்களின் குகையிலே போடப்படவேண்டும் என்று நீர் கட்டளைப் பத்திரத்தில் கையெழுத்திட்டீர் அல்லவா என்றார்கள். அதற்கு ராஜா: அந்தக் காரியம் மேதியர்களுக்கும் பெர்சியர்களுக்கும் இருக்கிற மாறாத பிரமாணத்தின்படி உறுதியாக்கப்பட்டதே என்றான்.

எனவே அந்த ஆட்கள் அரசனிடம் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் அவனிடம் அவன் இயற்றிய சட்டத்தைப் பற்றி பேசினர். அவர்கள், “தரியு அரசே, எந்த மனிதனும் 30 நாள்வரையிலும் அரசராகிய உம்மைத் தவிர வேறு எந்தத் தேவனையும், ஆளையும் நோக்கி யாதொரு காரியத்தைக் குறித்தும் ஜெபம் செய்தால் அவனைச் சிங்கக்கூண்டிலே போடவேண்டும் என்று நீர் கட்டளைப் பத்திரத்திலே கையெழுத்திட்டீர் அல்லவா?” என்றனர். அதற்கு அரசன், “ஆமாம். நான் அந்தச் சட்டத்தில் கையெழுத்திட்டேன். அதோடு மேதியர்கள் மற்றும் பெர்சியர்களுக்கு இருக்கும் மாறாத சட்டத்தின்படி அது ரத்து செய்யப்படவோ அல்லது மாற்றப்படவோ கூடாது” என்றான்.

உடனே அவர்கள் அரசனை அணுகி, அவனது தடையுத்தரவைப் பற்றிக் குறிப்பிட்டு, “அரசரே! முப்பது நாள்வரையில் அரசராகிய உம்மிடமன்றி வேறெந்தத் தெய்வத்திடமோ மனிதனிடமோ யாதொரு விண்ணப்பமும் செய்கின்ற எந்த மனிதனும் சிங்கக் குகையில் தள்ளப்படுவான் என்ற தடையுத்தரவில் கையொப்பமிட்டுள்ளீர் அல்லவா?” என்றார்கள். அதற்கு அரசன், “ஆம், மேதியர், பாரசீகரின் சட்டங்கள் மாறாதிருப்பதுபோல், இதுவும் மாறாததே” என்றான்.
