நியாயாதிபதிகள் நியாயம் விசாரித்துவரும் நாட்களில், தேசத்திலே பஞ்சம் உண்டாயிற்று; அப்பொழுது யூதாவிலுள்ள பெத்லெகேம் ஊரானாகிய ஒரு மனுஷன் தன் மனைவியோடும் இரண்டு குமாரரோடுங்கூட மோவாப் தேசத்திலே போய்ச் சஞ்சரித்தான்.

நியாயாதிபதிகள் நியாயம் விசாரித்துவந்த நாட்களில், தேசத்தில் பஞ்சம் உண்டானது; அப்பொழுது யூதாவிலுள்ள பெத்லெகேம் ஊரைச்சேர்ந்த ஒரு மனிதன் தன்னுடைய மனைவியோடும், இரண்டு மகன்களோடும் மோவாப் தேசத்திற்குப் போய் குடியிருந்தான்.

நியாயதிபதிகளின் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில், உண்ணக்கூட போதுமான உணவில்லாத மோசமான ஒரு பஞ்சம் யூதா நாட்டில் ஏற்பட்டது. அப்போது யூதாவிலுள்ள பெத்லெகேமை விட்டு, எலிமெலேக்கு என்பவன் தனது மனைவியுடனும், இரண்டு மகன்களுடனும் மலைநாடான மோவாபுக்குச் சென்றான்.
